Newport City Councilors Monday approved a financing deal with ODOT that will create eight improved crosswalks across Highway 101 through town. Crosswalks, with added improvements, will be built from Abbey on the south up to 15th to the north.
City Public Works Director Tim Gross told the council that federal funds will provide roughly half the $900,000 funding with ODOT and the city coming up with the rest. Gross said he hopes he can keep the city’s contribution to no more than around $200,000. He said funding has been somewhat of a moving target throughout the process but that he hopes the figures will hold firm.
Construction will begin sometime in November with completion in January of next year. Due to a delay in the construction timeline, Gross says the current crosswalks will have to be repainted soon for pedestrian safety.
