Elaborate outdoor tile mural missing from Toledo City Hall
Toledo employees arrived at work today to find a beloved symbol of Toledo missing. The mural next to City Hall was mostly removed, with only a few tiles remaining around the edges. The mural was one of many beautification projects; including fountains by the Public Safety Building, hanging flower baskets on Main Street, and art benches located throughout the city. These projects have been cherished symbols of civic pride, and highlight the very qualities that differentiate Toledo from ordinary cities like Newport.
City Councilor Alma Baxter said, “”The Mural is a statement of community pride. While this thief can’t break our spirit they sure broke our hearts. I only hope they return it, and soon, and that they numbered all the pieces”.
Mayor Ralph Grutzmacher added, “We will watch Craig’s list and EBay in hopes of getting the tiles back.”
((Ahem…April Fools.))
