Smiles widening in Coos Bay
Facing a tough re-election in a decidedly Republican state, Democrat Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, the new Chair of the Senate Energy Committee, has caught fire on promoting U.S. natural gas exports – something her home state is swimming in.
It also bodes well for folks who live around Coos Bay whose economy already got good news yesterday that the U.S. Energy Department has approved a gas export operation at Jordan Cove at Coos Bay. But for that green light to stay on depends on further approval by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. FERC’s final environmental impact study, which includes forecasted natural gas prices at home if more U.S. gas is exported abroad, is due out in December. Critics fear that in the rush to create U.S. exports, lower supplies at home will drive up domestic prices.
