Kicking off Spring Break Sunday, March 23, 2 PM at the Newport Performing Arts Center, the Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble will be presenting a potpourri of lively tunes designed to put you in the mood for the coming season. Selections will range from Broadway show medleys (think King and I), a march or two, novelty numbers (how about a tribute to Spike Jones?), a celebration of trolls, plus compelling arrangements of traditional folk songs and classical works.
The concert will be a benefit for CoastWatch and Food Share. CoastWatch is a volunteer program whose membership keeps watch over Oregon’s beaches and headlands, reporting on any changes — natural or man-made — of concern.
Concert attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable items for Food Share.
In addition to the music, there will be drawings for various items — BBQ grills, paintings, gift packs — on display in the lobby. Proceeds from these drawings will go towards funding scholarships for local school musicians.
The Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Jim Cameron, is a community band of amateur and professional musicians drawing membership from Newport in the north to Florence in the south. Currently there are over 30 members, ranging in age from high school sophomores to the AARP qualified. The band is open to all wind and percussion players without audition.
