The Newport Swim Team sent seven young swimmers to the 2014 Oregon Swimming State Championships. Lauren Bobo-Shisler (10) and Ben Zerr (9) both competed along with the other swimmers from all over the state at the Oregon Swimming 10 & Under State Championships on Februray 22nd and 23rd in Springfield, OR. The following weekend in Corvallis, OR, Kai Daniels (12), Erath Hernandez, Tristan Scarborough (11), Chayanna Blackburn (11), Caden Shanks (11) and Lucas Ellingson-Cosenza (11) swam at the 2014 11-14 Oregon Swimming Championships.
Bobo-Shisler swam in 6 events, bringing home personal best times in all events, swimming for three 1st place wins in the Girls 10 year-old 50 Free Style finishing with a time of 24.48, 50 Back-Stroke and 100 Back-Stroke with times of 32.02 and 1:10.59, 2nd place in the 100 IM with a time of 1:13.04 and 3rd place in the 100 and 200 Free-style events with times of 1:02.38 and 2:18.80. She broke NST records in the 50 and 100 Back-Stroke with times qualifying her for NW Sectionals as an 11 year old and earned her 6th qualifying time for the 2014 NW Sectional meet in the 100 IM, dropping almost 6 seconds from her seed time.
Ben Zerr made his first state appearance as an individual qualifier and swam in the 100 and 200 Free-Style and brought home ribbons in both events, 14th in the 200 and 15th in the 100, swimming personal bests in both of his events.
Kai Daniels also qualified in 6 events…Kai swam 6 events, made finals in 5 even bringing home 5 medals to add to his collection and one Newport Swim Team record. He was 3rd in the 50 free-style with a time of 24.73 and breaking the team record, 100 free-style 6th place with a time of 56.50, 50 Butterfly 4th with a time of 27.88. 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:07.36 with a place of 7th, 100 Breast-stroke 9th place with a time of 1:16.50 and 50 Breast-stroke 4th with a time of 32.5. He participated as anchor in both relays.
Caden Shanks swam in 5 events bringing home some top 8 finishes: 50 Back-stroke earning 10th place with a time of 33.82, 50 Free-style 6th place with a time of 27.95, 100 Back-stroke 8th place with a time of 1:13.41, 100 Free-style 9th place with a time of 1:02.96, Shanks qualifying and swimming the 200 Free-style but a late false start call disqualified him from this event. He also was a member of three boys relay events.
Lucas Cosenza-Ellingson qualified and swam in 4 events the 200 yard Individual Medley with a place of 16th, the 500 Free-style placing 13th with a time of 5:52.89,the 100 Back-stroke placing 25th with a time of 1:13.05, the 200 Free-Style placing 23rd with a time of 2:16.10 and swimming in three relay events.
Arath Hernandaz qualified in three events the 50 Free-Style earning 11th place with a time of 26.08, 100 Butterfly placing 27th with a time of1:10.37, and 100 Breast-Stroke placing 32nd with a time of 1:18.29.
Tristan Scarborough qualified in the 200 Free-Style placing 16th with a time of 2:30.30 and swam in the boys relay events. Chayanna Blackburn swam the 100 Breast-Stroke placing 16th with a time of 1:16.11. The Newport boys took three relays to this meet placing 9th in the Boys 11-12 200 Yard Free Relay and 9th in the Boys 11-12 400 Yard Free Relay.
These young swimmers all worked hard swimming in meets throughout the year to qualify for these events. There are thousands of swimmers competing in Oregon alone. Coach Chris Lamma says of the two state meets, “The last few weekends have been two of the best in Newport swimming, I’m extremely proud of all the swimmers for such amazing heart and work ethic to produce just big time results” Congratulations to the swimmers and Coach Chris Lamma who worked hard to help these kids secure their goals.
In March Daniels and Bobo-Shisler head up to Federal Way, WA with coach Chris Lamma for the NW Sectional swim meet with swimmers competing with kids from seven other states.
