Fatal accident on Highway 20 at Ellmaker Park Friday evening
A 64 year old Springfield man was killed in a traffic crash on Highway 20 yesterday evening at the entrance to Ellmaker State Park near Burnt Woods.
Oregon State Police reports that a 1999 Dodge pickup driven by RICHARD L. BARNEY, age 63, from Albany, was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 32 approaching the intersection for Ellmaker State Park. A 1994 Mitsubishi pickup driven by JERRY FRANCIS McLAUGHLIN, age 64, from Springfield, pulled up to the stop sign from Ellmaker Park and then into the westbound lane where it was struck in the driver’s side by the Dodge pickup. Both vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lane.
CPR efforts at the scene on McLAUGHLIN was attempted but he was pronounced deceased.
BARNEY and his 63-year old wife/passenger were not injured.
All persons involved in the crash were using safety restraints.
The highway was closed for about 30 minutes and then open to one lane for the next five hours during the investigation and clearance of the scene.
