Scott Hiatt – Standing trial again for death of walking soccer fan passing through Lincoln City
The man behind the wheel of a pickup that hit and killed a Seattle soccer fan walking through Lincoln City on his way to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup will get new legal counsel and a new trial. Scott Hiatt’s new trial date has not yet been determined.
On May 14th of last year, Hiatt was headed southbound on Highway 101 at the south end of Lincoln City when his pickup allegedly drifted over the fog line and hit soccer fan Richard Swanson who was walking as a one man fundraiser all the way to the World Cup in Brazil. Hiatt was charged with negligent manslaughter.
However, a dispute over where Swanson was walking specifically just prior to impact apparently could not be resolved by the jury and they could not reach a verdict. A hung jury was declared and the jury was dismissed. But not the charges.
A new trial date has not yet been set, but when it begins Hiatt will have a new attorney – one of Lincoln County’s better known defense attorneys, Guy Greco.
