Scott and Sandy Blackman have completed their first book for Arcadia Publishing on the 50 year surfing history of the central Oregon coast. The book will feature three chapters, the first covering the members of the Agate Beach Surf Club in 1964-65 and other local pioneers surfers into the 1970’s.
The second chapter will cover the many surf contests starting in 1965 at Agate Beach, the Cowabunga Longboard contests of Otter Rock in the 1980’s & 1990’s, finishing up with the popular The Gathering Surf Contest of South Beach and the big wave contests of Nelscott Reef. The last chapter in the book will lightly touch on today’s modern surfing, showing the changes in surfing including multi-generational families, both genders and the variations of surfing: Stand Up Surfing (SUP’s), kitesurfing, windsurfing and the use of personal water crafts (PWC’s) used by the big wave surfers.
