A message from the Office of Newport City Manager Spencer Nebel:
THE CITY OF NEWPORT WILL ACCEPT WRITTEN COMMENTS ON THE CURBSIDE COMPOSTABLES SERVICE PROPOSED BY THOMPSON’S SANITARY SERVICE UNTIL 5 P.M., TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2014
On February 18, the City Council of the City of Newport held a public forum to hear input from citizens regarding the curbside compostables service that has been proposed by Thompson’s Sanitary Service.
To allow for additional citizen input, the city will be accepting written comments, regarding the proposed service, until 5:00 P.M., on Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Written comments can be e-mailed to P.Hawker@NewportOregon.gov, by regular postal mail, or in person, to City of Newport, 169 SW Coast Highway, Newport, Oregon 97365.
If the proposed curbside compostables service is approved, Thompson’s Sanitary Service will provide an additional bin to its residential customers which will be dedicated to food waste and yard debris. The proposed new service will provide for curbside collection of yard and food waste, and extend the landfill life by reducing the volume of material entering the landfill. This additional service is proposed to add $6.59 per month to the existing residential customer bills. Customers may be able to reduce their cost for household refuse if this service allows households to reduce the size of their containers or the frequency of pick-up for remaining household trash.
The City Council anticipates taking action on the request from Thompson’s Sanitary Service to add this service to its residential accounts at its meeting of Monday, March 3, 2014, at 6:00 P.M.
