From Newport Police news release
On Monday, February 17, 2014 at about 3:18 a.m., Newport Police Officers were dispatched to the Elizabeth Street Inn on a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred.
According to the hotel clerk, a single suspect had entered the business armed with a firearm, and claimed to have “a bomb”. The suspect demanded an employee at the business surrender money from the business cash register. The employee complied. Once the suspect obtained the money, the suspect ordered the employee to the floor, where the suspect bound him.
The suspect fled, and the employee was able to break free from his restraints. As the employee was calling the authorities, the suspect re-entered the business and again confronted the employee. The employee relayed this information to dispatch, then fled to an upstairs area. Police Officers arrived and searched the area but, were unable to locate the suspect.
Update: The suspect is described as an adult male, 5-10, 150 pounds, wearing dark clothing.
The Newport Police Department is asking for assistance to locate the subject responsible for this crime. If you have any information regarding this case please contact the Newport Police Department at 541-574-3348.
Meanwhile Cannon Beach Police are investigating a robbery of a similar nature that occurred in Cannon Beach in early January. Police say a Cannon Beach hotel was robbed at gunpoint, also in the wee hours of the morning, by a darkly clothed robber who also tied up the clerk as was done here in Newport. In that case the getaway car may have been a dark colored Chevy Cruze as pictured here. Cannon Beach Police say Newport Police is comparing notes with them on the two robberies to determine if they might be related.
Any information on either one of these robberies should be given to Cannon Beach Police at 503-436-2811, or in Newport at 541-574-3348.
