Thursday morning’s shaker likely a sonic boom – No earthquakes reported by NOAA, USGS or UO

A sonic boom arrives after the plane may no longer be heard or visible…if it ever was close enough…

Many Lincoln County residents reported a boom, or a shake, or a wall/garage door rattling at around 8:30 Thursday morning. News Lincoln County quickly checked all the usual seismographic centers including NOAA, USGS and the University of Oregon…but none reported anything in the area…at all.

We like many others figured it was a military jet jock needing a brick under his gas pedal. And that seems to be what’s making sense. Reports varied considerably as to how the jolt affected their home, a porch, garage door, etc. Lots of variations that would lead you to believe it was not an earthquake. Those phenomena are pretty consistent over a large area. But this morning’s had a lot of variation to it.

No one reported any damage. The military are known to break the sound barrier offshore during certain kinds of air training maneuvers. Maybe that’s what it was. The military is not prone to divulging where they’re training or what they’re doing.
