At around 4pm on Highway 101 north of Newport a southbound semi slid out of control, went sideways down the highway and smacked an oncoming pickup.
The driver of the semi said that he was headed south at the Agate Beach Golf Course when he spotted some slowing traffic ahead. He said he applied his brakes but suddenly felt his trailer lurch off to the left. The driver said he tried to straight the rig out but it kept drifting left. In an instant the truck was headed sideways down all four lanes. An oncoming northbound pickup was caught by the trailer and was punched into a ditch by the impact.
The truck driver eventually regained control and stopped his rig. He then pulled around and pulled up to check on the pickup driver. Fortunately the trailer hit the pickup mostly forward of the passenger compartment sparing the driver any serious injuries. The pickup driver was out walking around talking to police and appeared to be okay. But on advice of medical personnel he is being transported to PCH for an evaluation.
Local roads are going to be an absolute skating rink tonight. As temperatures drop, vehicles will have next to NO TRACTION meaning they can’t move forward or back. They become completely uncontrollable at whatever speed you’re driving.
YOU DON’T WANT TO BE OUT DRIVING TONIGHT FOR ANY REASON ANY REASON! IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY CALL 9-1-1. DO NOT HAVE A FRIEND DRIVE YOU TO THE HOSPITAL. YOU’LL NEVER MAKE IT.
THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS NO ONE SHOULD BE OUT ON THE ROADS THIS EVENING, OR POSSIBLY EVEN TOMORROW MORNING. IT’S THAT BAD!
