Nearly 15,000 Oregonians, most with families, got a sudden and painful jolt last week. They got their last unemployment check. And there are no more coming unless the Congress can find a way to keep the life-saving money flowing. In high unemployment states like Oregon, the need is severe. Democrats in general say there are very few jobs available and most don’t pay family wages, plus stopping unemployment checks will hurt not only jobless families, but will make unemployment generally worse because there will be less money in circulation. Republicans contend the national debt is bad as it is without making it worse and secondly, too many people on unemployment aren’t looking for work because unemployment suits them just fine. It’s building what they call a “dependency society.”
