Central Oregon Coast NOW to Celebrate One Year Anniversary
The Central Oregon Coast Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) will celebrate its one year anniversary on Tuesday, January 21, at 6 p.m. with a no-host dinner meeting at Rogue Ales Brewer’s on the Bay, 2320 OSU Drive, Newport, Oregon 97365. The public is invited to celebrate with us. If you want to find out more about NOW this will be a great meeting to attend as it will focus on getting to know each other better and our current activities.
Central Oregon Coast NOW’s first year as a chapter was a busy one. There were speakers on such diverse issues as raising awareness of interpersonal violence in our community, bullying in schools, increasing participation of girls and women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education and careers, universal health care, LGBT 101, enhancing Social Security and Medicare, the proposed state Equal Rights Amendment, and a legislative summary by State Representative David Gomberg. The chapter also co-sponsored with My Sister’s Place a One Billion Rising (Against Violence Against Women) event, participated in the Bridge Walk for Peace, gathered signatures and raised money for Oregon United for Marriage and VoteERA.org, and much more. 2014 promises to be just as diverse and interesting.
Some of the activities Central Oregon Coast NOW members are currently involved in include a Court Watch program to increase public awareness of interpersonal violence in Lincoln County, working with the Lincoln County School District After School program to increase girls’ participation and interest in STEM activities, working with Ceasefire Oregon to decrease gun violence, supporting the efforts of Oregon United for Marriage to make same-sex marriage legal in Oregon, and helping VoteERA.org to get an Equal Rights Amendment into Oregon’s Constitution. Volunteers are needed for all of these efforts (you do not have to be a NOW member to volunteer).
The Central Oregon Coast Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) works locally and nationally to eliminate discrimination against women in all sectors of society, to assure access to reproductive health care, to eliminate domestic and sexual violence, and to promote equality and justice in our community. Officers for 2014 are Nancy Campbell Mead, President; Janice Eisele, Vice President; Nel Ward, Secretary; and Michele Walters, Treasurer.
