FBI statistics on rape, domestic abuse and other gender-based violence indicate that these crimes are all too often under-reported, under-investigated, under-prosecuted, and, if prosecuted, have low conviction rates.
The Central Oregon Coast chapter of the National Organization for Women is instituting a Court Watch program for Lincoln County. The intent is to create a snapshot of how our county justice system deals with sex crimes, domestic violence, and stalking cases and to identify what problems exist close to home and to bring the resulting data and issues to the forefront of our communities’ awareness.
The Central Oregon Coast chapter of NOW seeks volunteers to observe and provide feedback on court proceedings in our county. Orientation and training for volunteer court-watchers will be offered on Wednesday, January 15, from 1:15 to 2:45 pm in the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners meeting room on the ground floor of the courthouse at 225 West Olive Street in Newport.
