Rather than trying to draw a bunch of running enthusiasts who enjoy being hot and sweaty one moment, then bone chilling, body quivering cold the the next, during the middle of the week, Coast Hills Events holds their New Year’s Resolution 5k and Polar Plunge on the first Saturday of the year. This year it was January 4th.
Runners came from all over the place, but mostly from the Newport area as they once again resolved themselves to endure a cold shock to their bodily systems. They first ran 3.1 miles from the old South Beach Marina boat ramp, out the South Jetty, south to South Beach State Park, and back to the marina.
Top finisher was Alexi Pappas of Eugene with a course blistering 16 minutes-20 seconds, followed by Aaron Scovil of Nehalem at 19 minutes-11 seconds, and third place to Dmitri Au, a 15 yer old with a time of 20 minutes-29 seconds.
But the real fun was watching those who ran the course and then summarily deposited themselves into the 47 degree waters of the South Beach Marina Harbor. It was definitely more comfortable to be a spectator than a participant as you can see in the video below.
The Coast Hills Events sponsors the Polar Bear Plunge as well as the Newport Turkey Trot held Thanksgiving week and will be debuting a new fun running event March 16th with the Shamrock Run in Newport for the wee bit of Irish in all of us!
