Wednesday evening a young male driver headed east on Yaquina Bay Road, just east of John Nye Road, came up on a curve that he inadvertently straightened out. A sheriff’s deputy said the car left the road and hit a power pole and then spun around before coming to rest. The late 90s model Honda Civic suffered major front end damage.
The driver was not hurt. The deputy said the driver had been working on his car just earlier and thinks his brakes malfunctioned. The deputy added that the young man did not appear to be impaired in any way.
The crash knocked out power to those living along Yaquina Bay Road near the John Nye Road intersection – possibly a wider area. Residents uphill along John Nye Road itself were not affected. CLPUD was dispatched to the scene to repair an upper power line that was snapped by the collision.
