CLPUD accepts your holiday tree with a hearty “Thank You Very Mulch!”

Volunteers will be shredding Christmas trees into mulch across from Safeway in Newport Saturday December 28 and the following Saturday January 4 for donations to Community Services Consortium’s heating assistance program for low-income families and seniors.

Christmas trees will be shredded in seconds in a high-speed tree chipper — an event that amazes most children who come to watch. (There are a few adults who are likewise mesmorized.)

The mulch is given to local gardeners.

Those who bring their trees to be mulched and make a donation will receive a free energy-saving LED light bulb. LED light bulbs shine brightly for ten years or more. Anyone is welcome to contribute to the effort with or without a Christmas tree.

Volunteers will be accepting trees and donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, December 28 and next Saturday, January 4 at Atonement Lutheran Church in Newport, 2315 N. Highway 101, across from the Safeway Shopping Center. The Newport Les Schwab Tire Center is supporting the effort by picking up trees in the Newport area for a donation to the cause from those unable to bring their trees to the Atonement Lutheran Church site. To arrange for tree pick-up, Les Schwab volunteers can be reached at 541-270-1038.

Central Lincoln’s Fleet Specialist Bob Cusick is leading the volunteer tree-recycling effort. “All of us know someone or several folks who struggle to pay for heat,” Cusick said. “I love that this event is a win-win-win: folks can get rid of their Christmas trees after the holiday, help people who need the help, and get energy-saving light bulbs in the process. Plus, the trees are recycled into mulch, which is good for the environment. I love seeing the looks on kids’ faces when their Christmas trees are turned into mulch in less than seven seconds with that high-speed chipper.”

Contributions to the energy assistance program for those in need may also be mailed to Community Services Consortium at 120 Northeast Avery Street, Newport, OR 97365. Please mark checks “for energy assistance.”
