After review by the Newport Public Arts Committee, the sculpture of “Mother and Child” by Mary Lewis, was approved by the Newport City Council for placement outside the Newport Performing Arts Center at Olive and Coast Streets.
The artwork will be placed on an oval concrete base in a prominent viewing location just outside the PAC. Its acquisition and placement was made possible by the estate of recently deceased sculptor Mark Sponenburgh that gifted Oregon Coast Council for the Arts $50,000 to place the “Mother and Child” in a park like setting, viewable from many areas of the PAC grounds.
Mary Lewis was a student and lifelong friend of Sponenburgh. Sponenburgh died last year.
OCCA Director Catherine Rickbone said the artwork will be ready for viewing on the PAC grounds sometime next Spring.
