A Lincoln County Grand Jury has indicted a Newport man on charges of kidnapping a 7 year old girl off NE 60th on December 6th, hauling her off into the woods and trying to rape her, attempted sexual abuse and harrassment.
Police say that it was December 6th, right around dark, that Greene came upon some children playing outside an apartment complex on NE 60th. Suddenly he grabbed a 7 year old girl and took off with her under his arm into the woods. The other children instantly started yelling for help which alerted the girl’s mother who quickly ran off after the man who was still carrying her daughter. During the pursuit, police say Greene released the girl and took off running northbound on Highway 101.
Arriving police quickly established Greene as a person of interest in that he matched the description of the suspect – white male, very tall and weighing well over 200 pounds, and living in the area.
Officers quickly obtained a search warrant and entered Greene’s residence and obtained clothing and other evidence that linked Greene to the kidnapping. Greene was immediately arrested and taken to the county jail.
The Lincoln County Grand Jury reviewed the evidence presented by the district attorney’s office and returned an indictment for two counts of kidnapping, one count each of attempted rape, attempted sex abuse and harrassment. Greene’s bail was set at two million dollars.
Greene is described as a 28 year old white male, 6-2, 275 pounds with short red hair. He lives in the area off NW 60th (across 101 from the girl’s apartment complex).
Police ask that anyone who may have any information regarding the incident to contact the Newport Police Department, Detective Mitch France, at 541-574-3367.
