BACKGROUND:
On October 1, 2013, big changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) went into effect as a result of the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 (BW-12). Insurance premiums are increasing. Second homes, commercial buildings, residential rental properties, and newly purchased buildings located in mapped flood zones are all greatly impacted by this new law.

Afternoon sessions will feature a three-hour interactive presentation to provide information you need to advise your clients on how BW-12 will affect them. Topics include:
What the Biggert-Waters Reform Act Changed
What Buildings Types are Most Affected
Who is Required to Carry Flood Insurance
Key Terminology
FEMA’s New Levee Policy and its Implications for Future Flood Mapping
When and How to View Flood Insurance Rate Maps
When and How to Obtain Elevation Certificates
Actions that Reduce Flood Insurance Costs
How to Correct Erroneous Flood Zone Determinations
Questions & Answers

Evening sessions will explore how the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Program Reform Act of 2012 may result in costly flood insurance for some building owners in Oregon. Learn who is impacted by these changes and what steps to take if you receive a notice of non-renewal for an existing flood policy or a letter from your lender demanding that you purchase new flood insurance within 45 days. Learn how the rules changed for buyers and sellers of older homes located in mapped Special Flood Hazard Areas, how to challenge erroneous flood zone determinations, and what actions you can take to reduce flood insurance costs.

Our Lead Presenter: Since 2007, Christine Shirley has served as the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Coordinator and Natural Hazards Program Planner for the State of Oregon. Ms. Shirley offers technical assistance to Oregon’s 260 communities that participate in the NFIP. She interacts daily with state agencies, surveyors, building officials, real estate agents, building owners, and others who have questions or concerns about implementing the NFIP.

– Workshops are free. Attend as many as you like. –
