Newport Fire Department personnel responded to an outbuilding fire near Riverbend that was fully engulfed in flame – its smoke visible for miles. The building reportedly held tools and other household items – the main house was not involved.
Firefighters said a regular fire truck was not able to navigate the long narrow driveway that wound around for the better part of a mile from the Bay Road, so they had to resort to using a brush rig which doesn’t carry nearly enough water to be effective against such blazes.
Fire officials urge residents living in somewhat remote areas to consult with the fire department to evaluate their driveways as to their accessibility for fighting fires on their property.
Cause of this fire was deemed accidental.
