The Newport Community Drum Circle will be drumming to celebrate the warm spirit of the holiday season on Saturday [December 14], when it meets from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at its usual location in the glass enclosed, but unheated, gazebo at Don Davis Park, on the ocean, just west of the Performing Arts Center, in Nye Beach.
“Considering the recent low temperatures in Newport, we may also be drumming just to celebrate staying warm,” Drum Circle Coordinator Chandler Davis said, “but the gazebo is always cozy and comfortable in even the coldest weather once we start drumming.”
The December 14 gathering is dedicated to “celebrating the spirit of the season,” he said: “Whatever our particular cultural or religious backgrounds are, most of us like to think of the winter holidays as a time of joy, companionship, acceptance and cooperation, giving and sharing. Those are also the values that make the drum circle possible and that the drum circle tries to extend and perpetuate throughout the year.”
“We’re inviting everyone to come Saturday whether they have ever drummed or not and to bring seasonal songs they would like to sing or play, non-percussion acoustic instruments (as well as drums), holiday goodies, non-alcoholic beverages – and, if they wish to — any extra drums they have around the house that they could donate to us for use as loaners for folks who don’t have their own drum.”
The family friendly alcohol and drug free facilitated drum circles are free, all ages and skill levels are welcome, and there are always some drums available to borrow on a first-come basis. No musical experience is necessary. The drum circle is currently on its winter schedule, meeting every second Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the gazebo.
