Pedestrian crossing 101 near Hurbert hit by small red car. Driver and occupant flee the scene southbound.
Tuesday evening, a man walking across a dark Highway 101 outside of Moby Dick’s in Newport was struck by a car in the middle of the roadway. One witness said he saw the car go by then heard a sound like an object was hit. He told police he turned around to see the victim lying in the street, just to the east of the double yellow line.
The red car didn’t stop – it took off southbound on 101.
The victim was talking to his rescuers and appeared to be able to move his arms and legs. He appeared to have suffered a head wound. He was carefully loaded aboard a gurney and then placed inside an awaiting ambulance. Two minutes later he arrived in the emergency room of PCH.
His name was not released, but onlookers said he was a well known local.
Police said they were looking for a small red car, possibly a hatch back, with two occupants.
