Youth Orchestra Winter Concert Dec. 14
There’s no better way to ring in holiday cheer than to attend a delightful winter performance by the two youth orchestras supported by the Newport Symphony (NSO). The Newport Youth Symphony of the Oregon Coast (NYSOC) and its companion Overture Strings group will be performing a winter concert at the First Presbyterian Church in Newport on Saturday, December 14th at 7pm. All are invited to come enjoy the music and support our community’s developing musicians.
In contrast to many larger, more populated inland communities in Oregon, young string musicians living on the coast do not have the opportunity to play in an orchestra at school. However, through the beginner-level Overture Strings and more advanced NYSOC group, these students now have a way to learn, play, rehearse and perform together. NSO musicians Kathy Follett and Barbara Wilcox co-direct the youth musicians, and current student members range from 4th grade to high school, and come from Florence, Waldport, Newport and Lincoln City.
In addition, selected adult wind and string musicians who have varying degrees of playing experience will accompany the youth musicians in the winter concert. The adult beginners learn alongside the youth, and the experienced adult players mentor developing musicians of all ages.
The winter concert will feature a selection of symphonic pieces, as well as popular holiday favorites such as Sleigh Ride and Carol of the Bells. The musicians will also perform a series of popular Christmas carols, and invite the audience to sing along. This annual event is always great fun for everyone involved. It’s also an especially terrific opportunity to introduce young people to orchestral music and instruments, so plan to bring the whole family.
The concert will be held on Saturday, December 14th at 7pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 227 NE 12th Street in Newport. Admission is free but donations to the youth orchestra are gratefully accepted at the door.
