Lots of visitors to Lincoln City also leave their dog poop behind. Any place there's a little bit of grass or woods -- dog crap everywhere. The beach around Taft is especially bad. There are no doggie poop stations there that I've seen.

This is an old problem. I remember the beach at Agate Beach wayside practically covered with fireworks detritus in a 50' diameter starting from the small parking lot on the west side. That was in the early 90's. I've never seen that beach that trashed again---at least not by firework junk. Now it's more likely to be what's left behind by the trash heads who like to use wood pallets for firewood--but they're too lazy or foolish to take the nails out first and throw the nails in the trash cans. As a result, there are piles of rusty nails on the beach near the public access. Some are buried by the sand, some will be uncovered by the wind this summer. Mixed in w/the nails will be torn apart booze/soda cans (or cans stuffed with cigarette butts, making them impossible to recycle or return), pieces of glass from smashed bottles & plastic bits. Other trash.

Some of the people doing this are locals, some are visitors and/or part-time residents.

I see no reason why locals should have to pick up after the trash heads--unless they're being paid.

If people can't pick up after themselves and since there are only 4 park rangers (and they don't patrol at night) there's no way most of these trash heads will ever be caught in the act & fined, then I'd suggest imposing a "trash" tax on whatever tourists/visitors seem to use alot, food & soda perhaps, and all the proceeds of that tax will go towards paying residents, whether it's high school students or whomever, who are willing to spend the summer picking up after the trash heads.

I've picked up some trash on the beach for years, because I walk on the beach frequently and I've gotten tired of doing it--especially when I see people sitting on the beach & watching me who can't be bothered to pick up one piece of trash that's within an arm's reach of them. I have occasionally seen visitors to the beach who do pick up some trash if it's nearby or on their way back to their vehicle or hotel and I greatly appreciate their willingness to make an effort to keep this lovely place they're visiting beautiful. Unfortunately, such considerate people seem to be the exception, not the rule. There seem to be more people who don't litter (but don't pick up litter either) and that's good enough usually (way too many people who don't pick up after their dogs though and anecdotally--the larger the dog the less likely the owner is to pick up after it).

There are two SOLV pickups/year and some members of Coastwatch take trash bags w/them every time they walk "their" miles. All of those people are volunteers, not all live on the coast.

Despite the efforts of all of those people/volunteers, there is still trash on the beach. If there's going to be even more picking up of trash, then those doing it should get paid.

Why is there no mention of the fact that Depoe Bay has had a YEAR to decide what to do? Fish & Wildlife observed & recorded the effect of DB's fireworks on the shore birds last year. So the concerned business people & local gov't had plenty of time to look for a new place for fireworks, design a fireworks display that wasn't as loud & startling/damaging to the birds or to come up with something completely different from the fireworks display that occur up & down Lincoln County from the late June display Chinook Winds did to Newport, LC's, Waldport's etc.

Depoe Bay could've taken the opportunity to brainstorm w/its full and part-time residents--it could've involved its entire community in deciding what new, exciting & potentially unique way Depoe Bay and its visitors could've celebrated the 4th.

Instead, the businesspeople & local gov't played frightened ostrich and now blame Fish & Wildlife for ENFORCING THE LAW. It seems that they would rather violate the law and so what if some birds don't raise their young this year.

Maybe it's time for the local gov't & some business people in Depoe Bay to get their heads of out the sand and start talking to their community and come up with some ideas about better ways to celebrate the 4th.

I walk the beach 3-5 times every week, and I JUST don't see plastic shopping bags washing up on them. I see LOTS of plastic bottles, bits of hard plastic, rubber from crab traps, and styrofoam, though. I think this is a NON-issue that folks vote on that really won't have much impact. Ban the plastic bottles if you honestly want to solve a real problem.

I agree 100%!!!!! While walking my dog at Robison Park on the Alsea Bay this morning, we came across much the same as was found near Seal Rock. We also found something much more disgusting. Someone had evidently been too tired, lazy, inebriated, whatever, to walk the distance to the restrooms, so had pooped on the concrete walking path leading down to the bay. Not only that, they left their soiled clothing and soiled paper products laying right in the path. This wasn't just a dirty baby diaper, this was human waste left by someone obviously big enough and old enough to know better. What kind of morally bankrupt people would think that this type of behavior is OK? It's not!!! It's totally and completely disgusting!!!!! Come on, people! Wise up! Even birds know better than to foul their own nest!
