Newport Symphony Orchestra to Present Russian Program

The Newport Symphony Orchestra will present a program of Russian musical treasures for its final concert of the 2012-2013 Season. The concert will feature works by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Prokofiev and will be held on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 PM at the Newport High School located at 322 NE Eads Street in Newport. Music Director Adam Flatt will conduct the program.

Festive Overture, a piece demonstrating the compositional virtuosity of Dmitri Shostakovich, will open the evening’s program. Sergei Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite, written for a 1933 Russian film of the same name, will be the second work in the concert. The final work of the evening will be Piotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, a symbolic musical exploration of the emotional torment the composer endured throughout his life.

Adam Flatt, NSO Music Director, says of the program, “The vivid, public grandeur of the Russian tradition in music is the focus of the evening as we bring the season to an exciting close. From the pageantry of Shostakovich to Prokofiev’s blithe film score and the passion and candor of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, we traverse the full spectrum.”
A preconcert talk at 6:45 P.M. will precede the concert.

Dominique Moralez video click here.

The Newport Symphony Orchestra continues its 2012-13 season with a passionate performance of Italian opera overtures and arias, first on Saturday, January 26th at 7:30 pm, and again on Sunday the 27th at 2:00 pm. Both performances will be at the Newport Performing Arts Center on W. Olive Street in Newport.

Led by maestro Adam Flatt, the performances features a very special guest, Dominique Moralez. This star tenor has performed the lead roles in many operas and toured all over Europe, Asia, and elsewhere around the world.

Though he keeps homes in Copenhagen and Paris now, Moralez is a native Oregonian. The weekend’s performances, his first ever in Newport, will be a musical homecoming. Raised in the Portland area, Dominique made his professional debut at age 10 with the Portland Opera as a boy soprano. The weekend’s performance is his first in Oregon since those early childhood days. His friendship with the NSO’s music director, Adam Flatt, encouraged Moralez to return to his roots for this special weekend of singing.

The show’s music will come from a set of beloved Italian composers such as Rossini, Bellini, and Puccini. Part of the performance will be given over to orchestral numbers, beginning with the overture to Verdi’s Nabucco, a solemn piece that foretells the Jewish people’s slavery and exile under a Babylonian king. Other pieces offer a lighter, energetic, and playful mood, such as the suite of four dances composed by Respighi.

But the greatest delights promise to come when Dominique Moralez takes the stage to sing with his thrilling voice. His performance of melodic songs will conclude with the most famous and stunning aria from The Daughter of the Regiment, a comic opera by Donizetti. This aria, Ah mes amis (“Ah! My Friends”), has been called “the Mount Everest for tenors.”

A preconcert talk at 6:45 P.M. will precede the concert.

The Newport Symphony Orchestra is supported by the City of Newport, Coast Arts, and various foundations, businesses, and individual donors.

Tickets are $34 and $20, or only $10 for students, and can be purchased by phone at 541-265-2787 or in person from the Newport Performing Arts Center at 777 W. Olive St. in Newport.

NSO Opens 2012-2013 Season with “Carmina Burana” at Newport High School

The Newport Symphony Orchestra opens its 2012-2013 season with a concert on September 29 at 7:30 p.m. featuring Carl Orff’s dramatic and well-known “scenic cantata,” Carmina Burana. The Central Coast Chorale, the Willamette Master Chorus, and Oregon Repertory Singers will combine vocal forces to bring this major musical, vocal, and theatric work to the Newport High School auditorium. Guest soloists include Willamette Voice Instructor, Amy Hansen, soprano, Willamette music student Derek Sup, tenor, and Linfield professor of music Anton Belov, baritone. The NSO Music Director Adam Flatt undertakes his sixth season at the helm of the symphony and will conduct Carmina.

The Central Coast Chorale was founded by Director Mary Lee Scoville, DMA and local residents in 1997 as a vehicle for Central Coast community men and women who enjoy singing and listening to music in a convivial and professional setting. The Willamette Master Chorus, conducted by Paul Klemme is based in Salem Oregon, and is comprised of 75 veteran professional and dedicated amateur musicians. Six choirs comprise the 80+member Oregon Repertory Singers and is a professional-caliber adult choir. Dr. Ethan Sperry is the Artistic Director for the Oregon Repertory Singers.

Adam Flatt, NSO Music Director, says of the September program, “Even before the final notes had faded in our 2010 Beethoven 9th we knew that we must set about to perform another large choral work in Newport, and to combine again the Central Coast Chorale with our good friends at the Willamette Master Chorus, as well as the Oregon Repertory Singers. With Orff’s Carmina Burana we enter into an experience of elemental force, primal thrill, and primitively intoxicating rhythm. Swaggering and lusty, but in turn also tender and maudlin, Carmina is always a memorable event.”

A preconcert talk at 6:45 P.M. will precede the concert.

The Newport Symphony Orchestra kicks off its Summerfest this month, with a series of performances culminating in the seventh annual free Fourth of July pops concert. “This year’s Summerfest will bring some really special guests to Newport, as well as some old friends from closer to home. It will also give audiences the opportunity to see a real range of types of performances in different venues,” said NSO Music Director Adam Flatt.

Summerfest begins with a performance of Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale” on Friday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Newport. The performance will be presented by musicians of the NSO and the Chintimini Chamber Music Festival, along with actors David Ogden Stiers, Josh Lawrence, and Robert Delk Hirsh. The piece, based on a Russian folk tale, is a parable about a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil for a book that predicts the future of the economy. Stiers, an international star of stage and screen and the Associate Conductor of the NSO, will perform the part of the narrator. The devil will be played by Hirsh, founder of the Willamette STAGE company. Local favorite Josh Lawrence will play the soldier. The Newport Symphony will perform works of Mozart, Copland, and Barber on Saturday, July 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. The NSO is pleased to welcome back soprano Julie Davis in this concert, who performed at last year’s free Fourth of July community concert. On Sunday, July 3 at 7:30 p.m. David Ogden Stiers will present “Words Surrounded by Music,” a series of selected readings, at the Newport Performing Arts Center.
Summerfest will culminate in the NSO’s seventh annual free Fourth of July community concert, a program of pops and patriotic music at Newport High School at 4:00 p.m. The concert will feature Norman Leyden, the Conductor Emeritus of the Oregon Symphony, as well as soprano Katie Harman, former Miss Oregon and Miss America for 2002.
