Chase Cook, son of Ashland resident Brenda Johnson, has been missing since the night of Saturday, June 23rd. She is trying to spread the word in case someone spots him or his GMC pick-up. He was living in Medford – a very predictable life – until he appeared to drive away, leaving all his belongings, save one – a pistol.

Brenda and the rest of the family are desperate to find him. A missing persons report has been filed, but family and friends are hoping that the power of social networking will help. Suggestions and psychic hits are so valuable to them right now so please don’t hesitate to contact them.

Chase was last seen wearing the hat that’s in the attached pictures and his black hoodie.

Thank you for anything you can do.

3:24pm
Search and Rescue teams from Lincoln, Benton, and Lane counties are continuing to search stretches of Drift Creek, south of Toledo and north of Alsea Bay for any sign of two males in a canoe that set out for a quick jaunt down Drift Creek yesterday. They failed to show up at their planned pick-up point last evening. The two had planned to navigate up to 20 miles of the creek before pulling out near Bayview Road near Waldport. The Coast Guard has assisted in the search with one of their large helicopters. They are in the air right now (3:27pm) over the search area. The terrain is extremely rugged with views from logging roads down into the creekshed very obscured by thick undergrowth. Search teams say continued favorable weather will aid in their search and make it more likely that the two men could still be alive.

Search crews report that there are many downed trees in the area, lying across the creek from last month’s wind storms. Crews say it raises concerns that the two could have collided with one of the trees and overturned their craft. Search crews report that water levels in Drift Creek are much higher than normal as Winter snows and high groundwater fill Oregon’s coastal rivers and streams.

1:15pm
Linn and Benton County Search and Rescue teams have joined up as one team to search for two missing canoeists who left the Toledo area yesterday on a Drift Creek run down to where it joins the Alsea River. Lane County Search and Rescue is just now coming on scene. Law enforcement is discouraging help in that the terrain is very rough – steep dropoffs and unstable soils. Family members and friends have been discouraged from going out on their own to look.

As a matter of course, Search and Rescue teams need to focus on who they’re looking for and not be sidetracked if others, not equipped or experienced enough to search, gets into trouble themselves. The terrain up there is as tough as it gets in Oregon.

8am Monday
Search and Rescue personnel are trying to find two overdue canoeists who set out on Drift Creek, up Thousand Line Road yesterday, south of Toledo. They were supposed to work their way toward the Alsea River and meet their pick-up party there but didn’t show last evening. Authorities say it’s a 20 mile run on the creek and water levels are very high, much higher than normal. They add that there are many downed trees along the creek which pose a danger to anyone on the water, like if they’re swept under a fallen tree and get trapped underneath.

Lane and Benton County Search and Rescue are expected to join the search this morning. Authorities say the terrain is very steep and as they hike along the upper road, they can’t always see the creek below. So they’re doing a lot of hill climbing. The Coast Guard was expected to launch a helicopter and search the area from the air.

Austin Neves and Akneesha Silva, found near Moolack, north of Newport

Austin Neves and Akneesha Silva have been found and are okay. Alert law enforcement spotted the two walking along Highway 101 near Moolack Beach. They were trying to hitch hike north on 101.

Akneesha’s parents raced to the scene where she and her boyfriend Austin Neves were being held by the officer. He spotted the two trying to hitch a ride on Highway 101 at Moolack Beach, a few miles north of Newport. Both had been missing since they ran away together in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Akneesha’s mother Shannon Benfit said she was so thankful and relieved to get her daughter back. She said she hasn’t been able to get any sleep since she went missing Sunday morning. She said “I can’t thank the community enough for their love and concern for my daughter and for Austin. I’m just so thankful they’re okay.” Shannon Russman, Austin’s mother, said “I’m very grateful for the safe return of my son and that he and Akneesha are fine. And I thank the community for all their help and prayers for us. We especially want to thank Newport Police, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police for all their hard work at trying to find our kids.”

Both families are again re-united this evening. Tomorrow both families have said they want to do a TV interview with News Lincoln County to personally thank Newport and Lincoln City residents for their assistance and concern for their children.

6pm update
Shannon Benfit, mother of Akneesha Silva, says she was contacted by a man who said he remembers seeing her daughter and companion Austin Neves on the beach, just below Don Davis park and the Elizabeth Inn this morning at around 4am. He said the two were obviously intoxicated drinking spiced rum. He said he didn’t know at the time that the two were being sought by their parents. She also reported that a camping tent is missing from his house which indicates that the two might be camping along the beach somewhere. Newport Police were notified on the information.

The mothers of Austin Neves, 12 and Akneesha Silva, 13 have issued a personal plea to their children who have apparently run away together from home and may still be in the Newport area. Both have been missing for over a day and their families are desperate to hear from them.

Akneesha Silva is a Lincoln City resident who commutes daily to Newport Prep and Austin Neves lives in Newport, attending the same school. Newport Police have listed both a voluntary runaways from their homes. Their families think they may be hold up in an abandoned home, or are “hanging out” with friends somewhere in the Newport area amidst adults who may not know the kids are missing.

Anyone in the area who may have seen the kids are asked to call 9-1-1 or Newport Police at 541-574-3348. Their pictures are below:

Two frantic families are trying to find their early teen children who disappeared together at around 3am Sunday morning. The mother of Akneesha Silva said her child always leaves her cellphone on so she can be reached. But so far, she says her daughter’s phone has been off. Shannon Benfit says there was a rumor that Akneesha and her boyfriend, Austin Neves, may have hopped a bus in Newport enroute to California or maybe hitchiking in that direction. A check with bus companies indicates that they were not on any buses leaving the area.

Adkneesha is 13 years old, is 5-7, 135 lbs, auburn hair and blue eyes. She lives in Lincoln City. Austin is about the same age, 5-3, 115lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes. He lives in Newport. Both attend Newport Prep, across Eads from Newport high School. Austin was believed to be wearing a red hoodie, green t-shirt, blue jeans and is wearing braces. He also is is believed to be wearing a black school type backpack. Akneesha is thought to be wearing possibly a black jacket, blue tank top, tall grey boots with black and white sox. She has purple highlights in her hair and her right ear is pierced.

Newport Police say they have checked to the Eugene bus company that comes through Newport and they say they did not pick up any young children, nor would they sell tickets to young children. Same for the Amtrak train in Eugene and Albany. Thus far police say they may still be hanging around Newport at a friend’s house pondering their situation. Or they might be in an abandoned house seeking shelter.

Shannon Benfit said she was told by an Oregon State Trooper that there was a report that two young people were seen hitch hiking north out of Newport yesterday, and that they got onto a bus. But the reporting party said they weren’t sure it was them, nor of any identification on the bus.

Austin’s mother Shannon Rullman said she has been updating her son’s Facebook page so that everyone will know that he is missing and that if anyone knows where he and Akneesha are to contact her or Newport Police. She said she and her husband did a long drive-thru of Newport last evening checking out abandoned houses or places where the teens might be. She says she believes in her heart that the two are still in Newport – maybe hanging out at a friends house whose parents “don’t know what’s going on.”

Anyone who may know the whereabouts of these two children should call Akneesha’s mother Shannon Benfit at 541-921-5982, or Austin’s mother Shannon Rullman at 541-264-8189, or their nearest law enforcement agency.

Provided by Newport Police

Wednesday afternoon, at about 4:30 p.m., Newport Police Officers were dispatched to the 600 Block of NE 56th Street, located in the Longview Hills neighborhood. The report involved an elderly male missing from his home. Upon arrival, Officers learned that Richard Caulkins, age 83, was reported to be in the first stages of Alzheimer’s. He had left his residence shortly after 3:00 p.m. to go for a walk on a nearby forest service road. When he did not return, his family began to search for him. As darkness was approaching, the family called Newport Police for assistance.
Due to the difficult terrain, freezing temperature, and nightfall the Lincoln County Search and Rescue (SAR) team was summoned for assistance.

The Longview Hills Community Response Team, comprised of members of the Newport Police Volunteers, was also requested to canvas the neighborhood. The communication computer software program Everbridge was used to call-back approximately 178 area residents to make notification of the missing subject.

At about 7:15 p.m., members from the Lincoln County SAR team located Caulkins one mile from his residence, and approximately 120 feet below the forest service road. Caulkins had become disoriented, and was unable to find his way home when it became dark. He had slid down a steep embankment and was not visible from the road. Rescuers administered first aid to Caulkins as they prepared to extricate him from the dense shrubbery and into a waiting ambulance.

At about 9:00 p.m. rescuers arrived at the waiting ambulance where Caulkins was examined for injuries and hypothermia. Other than some scratches on his hands, Caulkins was found to be at normal body temperature and in good spirits. He was returned to his residence by the ambulance; his family declined transport to the hospital.

The temperature during the search was recorded at 39 degrees Farenheit.

The Newport Police Department was assisted by the Lincoln County Search and Rescue Team, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Pacific West Ambulance, and the Longview Hills Community Response Team.

Missing teen Kyrsten Roth has been found in a Portland apartment, rented to a 20 year old man. The manner of discovery was rather round-about but enough to confirm that Roth, 15, had not run off with a northern California man as earlier believed.

The story is in the Oregonian. Click here.

Kyrsten Roth, 15

A Gresham teenager has been missing from her home for the past week and her family is worried sick about her. They fear that she has run off with an online predator with whom she was probably in communication with the night she went missing from her home.

Her mother says Kyrsten Roth had apparently been talking on the phone with a man in Susanville, California the night of December 3rd, the night she disappeared. Gresham Police say they alerted Susanville Police who went out to the residence but did not find the man. However, they discovered that there may be a Vallejo, California connection.

Kyrsten Roth is a very attractive 15 year old girl, 5-4, auburn hair with blonde roots, and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing gray pajama bottoms, and could be wearing a black jacket with an Oregon State University Beaver patch on the upper left chest area, and an orange scarf.

Anyone who has seen Kyrsten should immediately call Gresham Police at 503-518-2318.
