Here is a sampling of what will be offered during February’s First Weekend Toledo:
The Yaquina River Museum of Art will be open on Saturday and Sunday, the 4th and 5th, from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm. Through February 27, the Museum art collection is celebrating its donors. Curator Michael Gibbons has selected 10 works of art from the Permanent Collection to be shown the
month of February. The key painting “California Coast Farm,” is a watercolor, 21½” x 28½” by John Hewitt, an artist who lived and worked in Toledo in the past. It depicts a scene on the Northern California coast. Gibbons states, “Hewitt uses great skill in transforming the landscape through his medium of watercolor into an image of contemporary times.” Through the generosity of donor Don Weller, past Chairman of the Museum Board, funding was received to purchase the painting from the artist and is now in the Permanent Museum Collection. Also to be shown is work by artists Jack Wenstrom, Don Prechtel, Ivan Kelly, Jacqueline Hewitt, Ed Young, and five others. Light refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Museum.

Gallery Michael Gibbons will be open on Saturday the 4th from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday the 5th from noon to 6:00 pm. Oregon wine and cheese reception with the artist. Gallery Michael Gibbons continues to focus on Spring and the beauty Gibbons has found in the exquisite flower gardens at internationally known Schreiner’s Iris Garden, Gervais. Each year the artist eagerly awaits notification from the Schreiner family that all is abloom to travel with paints and easel to make his work on location. Spending up to 3 days working en plein air, Gibbons has painted many scenes including out in the fields where row upon row of color blocks tease the eye. As with so many of Gibbons paintings, “Schreiner’s First Show Garden,” 15″x15″ oil, which depicts one of three locations for the public to walk in, shows the artist’s need to find a “way” or “path” into the scene he has just painted. Join Michael Gibbons at his gallery to see and discuss the work he creates.
