Newport Public Library launches automated phone notifications
From Library Director Ted Smith

Newport Public Library patrons may notice a new voice on their voicemail in the coming weeks: a pleasant recorded message, informing them that a requested book has arrived or that items are overdue. Newport joins Tillamook County Library and Driftwood Public Library in offering this service, a feature of the new library system software launched earlier this year. It’s all part of the changeover to Oceanbooks Library Consortium.

Most library patrons have become accustomed to receiving their hold pick-up notices and overdue notices via email, and these individuals will continue to receive email notices as before. There are still patrons who do not have email, and notifying these patrons has historically meant either a phone call from a volunteer, or a mailed notice. The automated notice will help minimize the amount of time our volunteers spend calling patrons each week, allowing them more time for other duties.

Questions about this service may be directed to Ted Smith, Library Director at 541-265-2153.

Dark and Stormy Night at Driftwood

Driftwood Public Library is pleased to announce that it will be presenting the 9th year of its Dark and Stormy Night Mystery Series this October. A different mystery author will visit the library each Thursday afternoon in October at 4:00 p.m. to speak to readers about their work.

The first author in the series this year will be Heather Sharfeddin, who will visit the library on October 4th. Sharfeddin’s mystery books include Mineral Spirits, Windless Summer and, most recently, Damaged Goods. A native of Montana, and then Idaho, Sharfeddin’s first novel was 2005’s Blackbelly, a contemporary western praised by The Chicago Tribune as “a good old-fashioned cowboy tale that’s as gritty as they come…” She currently lives in Oregon.

On October 11th, Johnny Shaw will visit the library from Portland. The author of the books Dove Season and this year’s Big Maria, Shaw also is the editor-in-chief of and frequent contributor to the online fiction quarterly, Blood & Tacos, a loving homage to the men’s adventure paperbacks of the 1970s and 80s. He also owns an online bookstore, Johnny’s Used Books, and teaches screenwriting.

Amanda Lee will be visiting all the way from southwest Virginia on October 18th. Amanda writes a series of embroidery cozies set on the Central Oregon Coast including the titles The Quick and the Thread, The Long Stitch Good Night and this year’s Thread on Arrival. Her next book in the series will be released next year: Cross Stitch Before Dying.

To wrap up the series, Jack Judge visits from right here in Lincoln City to celebrate the publication of his most recent novel. Jack’s novels include Crosetti’s Curse, The Dead Lie Restless in Pedro Creek and Death Rides the Carousel.

The programs are sponsored by The Driftwood Library Foundation and the D’Sands Condominium Motel who have graciously donated lodging for the authors. All programs are free to the public. All of the programs will take place at the library, 801 SW Highway 101 (2nd Floor) in Lincoln City. All inquiries about the programs should be directed to Ken Hobson, 541 996 1242 (kenh@driftwoodlib.org).

Newport Public Library offers four programs each week to help preschool children gain the skills needed to learn to read and develop lifelong reading habits. The free programs, held in the library’s Hofer Children’s Room, feature readings, songs, and activities led by early literacy professionals. Programs begin the week of September 3.

Toddlertimes for little ones up to age 3, are held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Storytimes for preschoolers ages 3 to 6, are held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. (bilingual Spanish) and on Friday afternoons at 1:00 p.m.

“Research shows that preschoolers who have the library in their lives are better prepared to become readers and it is the readers who succeed in this technically complex world,” says Rebecca Cohen, Youth Services Manager and provider of thousands of literacy based programs in her 26 years at Newport Library. “In addition to the obvious language and listening skills, children also develop cognitive skills, fine motor skills, early math concepts, and social skills at the library’s preschool programs. A bonus for parents and caregivers who bring their children to the library is the opportunity to socialize with other adults who have children the same age.”

No registration is required. For more information, please call the library at 265-2153 or check the library’s website, www.newportlibrary.org.

The libraries in Lincoln City, Newport and Waldport Dream Big, READ! this week by playing Book Bingo on Wednesday, July 25. All children and families are invited to attend one of these free programs.

Wednesday, July 25, Book Bingo will be played at Waldport Public Library (10 a.m.), Newport Public Library (1 p.m.), and Driftwood Public Library in Lincoln City (6:30 p.m.).

“Book Bingo is something we did every summer for many years,” says Rebecca Cohen, Children’s Librarian at Newport Library. “But by 2008 we had so many children attending our summer programs that we could no longer fit inside the library’s McEntee meeting room. When the Newport Rotary Club built Literacy Park, we had room for all the children but I couldn’t figure out how to play bingo in the outdoor amphitheater. Fortunately, I don’t work alone and my esteemed colleague, Jan Eastman, figured out how to use stamps for bingo instead of beans or chips. So, finally, we are back in the Book Bingo business!”

Book Bingo is played using the covers of children’s books instead of numbers in the columns headed R E A D S. When a child has a bingo, they get to select a book from among the many that have been donated to the library throughout the year.

For more information about this week’s program or other summer reading presentations, please contact your local library.
