It’s Dutch Luv Time!
Valentine’s Day Treat Helps Fight Hunger

Newport (Feb.14, 2013) — Valentine’s Day is Dutch Luv Day, when Newport’s Dutch Bros. Coffee location will be offering a drink of your choice for a donation of 3 cans of non-perishable food. Tuna, cereal and peanut butter are most needed. Please, no expired food.

“We love this partnership with Dutch Bros., because they understand how important it is to help our neighbors.” says Nancy Smith of Food Share.

The annual Dutch Luv Day effort extends company-wide, taking place this year at all 195 locations in 94 cities in seven states. To find the Dutch Bros. Coffee location nearest you and hours of operation, visit www.dutchbros.com/locations

In 2012, Dutch Luv Day raised over 100,000 pounds of canned food. In Lincoln County, our amazing community raised 660 pounds last year for our friends and neighbors in need.

Dutch Bros. Coffee donates over $1 million every year to nonprofit organizations and causes, in an effort to achieve its goal of “making a difference, one cup at a time.”

Federal food distribution cutbacks, grants drying up and a continued sluggish economy is STRAINING our local food pantries. SO!

Food Share, Lincoln County’s central food distribution center that sends food to all the other community food pantries, is holding a fundraiser on KNPT radio and their five affiliate radio stations through 5pm friday. The fundraiser is working with Coastal Farm and Ranch to help raise money for Food Share of Lincoln County. Food Share is able to acquire and distribute five pounds of food for every one dollar donated. Food Share not only stocks up food pantries in Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, Siletz, Toledo, Newport and Waldport but they also support local soup kitchens.

So over the next three days (11/28-11/30) Food Share is asking for financial pledges that Coastal Farm and Ranch will match up to $1,000. Coastal Farm is located in Albany but they have a huge customer base along the Oregon Coast. In early October they donated 100 outdoor tarps to the Newport Homeless Connect Project. Every dollar you donate will be matched by Coastal Farm. If you donate $5, Coastal Farm will match it with another $5 so Food Share will have another $10 to buy food for hungry Lincoln County families.

This special matching program ends at 5pm Friday November 30th.

Call in your donations now to 541-265-2266.

As a branch of 4-H, the K-9 Krusaders Dog Club has been around for years teaching students the responsibilities of owning, training, and showing a dog through hands on learning and teaching. This year is a very special year for us. It is the 25th Anniversary of one of our favorite fundraisers: Santa Dog Photo Night.

Santa Dog Photo Night is an opportunity for dog owners from all over the county have their dogs photo taken with Santa. And you and your family can be in the picture too! The photos always come out great and make excellent Christmas cards. Plus it helps support our club! We also take $1 off if you bring in two cans of food (people or pet) which will be donated to Food Share.

Santa Dog will be taking place on Wednesday November 14th from 7-9pm at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. The cost is $12 for two 4×6 photos of the same pose, you can purchase more than one pose if you wish. Please have your dogs on a leash. If you have any questions call Sue Giles Green @ 541-444-9247 or visit us on facebook at facebook.com/K9Krusaders

Lincoln County’s various food pantries are getting the benefit of a lot of hard work by local organization from those who sing to those who save lives at sea.

The Coast Guard in Newport put on a scary Halloween Haunted House that collected 1,000 pounds of food and $200 in cash for Lincoln County Food Share. Food Share is the county-wide collection center that helps distribute food to food pantries from Lincoln City to Yachats. The Oregon Coast Aquarium, with their Creatures of the Night event, collected 2,335 pounds of food for food share. And the men’s a capella group “Coastal Aires” garnered 221 pounds of food during their two concerts in Newport and Lincoln City.

There have been other food drive events throughout the county that benefits individual food pantries serving their communities. ‘Tis the season.

JC Market Thriftways in Lincoln County have a long history of donations and other assistance to families and youth sports from Lincoln City to Yachats. And they’re doing it again this Thanksgiving. They’ve come up with a plan to funnel more critically needed food into Food Share, Lincoln County’s food bank.

JC Market is calling it “Kidsgiving” Food Bank Drive and runs from October 29th through November 15th. All shoppers have to do is come in, buy a bag of groceries for $10 (which has up to $20 worth of food in it) and it’s delivered to Food Share. Our donations are critically important because Food Share’s federal food donations have been cut substantially due to federal budget problems.

Those who donate the $10 bag of groceries are given a “Thank You Coupon Flyer” for FIVE “Hot” coupons to be used at their next visit to JC Markets/Thriftway. The coupons are good through the end of November.

JC Market’s Lyle Mattson says the program debuted today without much fanfare and already shoppers are scooping them up. Mattson said “We’re delighted that the program shows such promise especially with so many families in need this Thanksgiving.”

“Kidsgiving” is available at JC Markets in Newport and Toledo and the Thriftway at Lincoln Beach.
