It was blustery, rainy and it was cold – a typical late Winter day Saturday on the coast. But to the delight and surprise of the Toledo Food Pantry, more than a hundred runners showed up to pay an entry fee to raise money to help feed Toledo’s hungry families. And there’s a lot of them; 156 families a month according to a pantry official. Funding and surplus food have been shrinking while the need for food has been rising. With unemployment checks running out, many families are desperate. So the Toledo Food Pantry, like so many others, are having to turn to their individual communities to find creative ways for residents to chip in and help fill the gap. And from the looks of the pantry’s Shamrock 5K Run, good and generous hearts abound in and around Toledo – each and every one making a big difference.

At the end of the event, sponsors provided food, drink, commemorative shirts and other accessories courtesy of Food Share, Oregon Coast Bank, Bank of the West, Pig Feathers Barbecue/Twisted Snout, Mo’s Restaurants, Yaquina Bay Oysters, Pepsi distributor Bigfoot Beverages, Toledo Rotary, Copeland Lumber, Port of Toledo and the trash was handled by Dahl. Shirts for the runners from Advertee’s. Other sponsors helped as well. They even had live music for the finishers provided by the James and Julz Kasner Band.

We’re all going to be seeing more of these kinds of fundraisers on behalf of our local food pantries because Federal surplus food supplies have been cut IN HALF and other assistance agencies have had their budgets cut as well, absolutely requiring each community pull together to help ensure that no family in their area goes to bed hungry.

Immediate Pig Feathers Family Stu and Becky Miller and children

Pig Feathers BBQ is pleased to be helping two worthy organizations in their efforts to help local families in need.

The Toledo Food Pantry has placed a collection box in the restaurant, where customers may leave items of non-perishable food. “It is our hope that our customers will remember that some of their neighbors are not so fortunate,” says co-owner Becky Miller. As an added incentive, on December 8, during Toledo’s Hometown Holiday, anyone who places a food donation in the collection bin at the restaurant will be entered in a drawing to win a Pig Feathers gift card.

This year, the restaurant is also once again collecting children’s toys for the Toledo Elks annual toy drive. “This is an event our customers have enthusiastically supported every year since we opened,” Becky says. The drive seeks unwrapped gifts valued at approximately $20 for infants, children, and teens. Gift tags are hanging on the tree at Pig Feathers, and gifts must be returned to the restaurant before December 15.

Pig Feathers is located at 300 S. Main Street in Toledo. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 11am-8pm and Friday-Saturday, 11am-9pm, 336-1833.

Video by Milo Graamans, Yachats

The video makes it look oh-so easy, but it really does take a lot of work from big-hearted people, just like YOU!

Santa and his elves will gather food and money for Christmas Holiday Food Baskets in the south county this weekend. All three south county fire departments help with this local holiday tradition. Following Thanksgiving’s 311 food baskets, there is a need to gather a lot of canned food and dollars to restock the supplies for Christmas. Every can and every dollar will help put food on the table for more than 1,000 local residents, children to seniors.

In Waldport, Santa will ride the rescue ATV with Central Oregon Coast Fire Department. Be ready for him Friday evening in the Peterson Park area along Alsea Highway and in Old Town Waldport. He’ll be back Saturday evening on Crestline Drive, Range Drive and in the Norwood area. If Santa doesn’t come to your particular neighborhood, you are encouraged to bring donations to the Fire Station on Highway 34.

Saturday the 1st in Yachats, bring your canned food and cash donations to the Yachats Fire Truck in the C&K Market parking lot or the Fire Hall on 2nd Street all weekend.

The Seal Rock Fire Department will escort Santa door-to-door Saturday starting about 1:00 in Makai, then going to Driftwood Village. They plan to be in Bayshore and Sandpiper between 3:00 and 5:00. It’s a large territory, please be ready. You are also encouraged to bring donations to the Seal Rock Station on Grebe St. or Bay Mart Deli.

All food donations and cash contributions will be used to feed children, families and seniors living in Seal Rock, Waldport, Yachats, Tidewater and Five Rivers. Have a bag or box of food at your front door with Santa’s name on it or take food donations to any south county fire station.

Christmas Baskets will be filled with canned foods such as soups, vegetables, fruit, tuna, beans and chili, as well as peanut butter, pastas and other goods. Collected food goes to South Lincoln Resources where volunteers fill hundreds of boxes, also adding a ham, bread, potatoes, onions, carrots and eggs. It’s a big deal for hundreds of our families who may not have enough to eat without this community generosity.

South Lincoln Resources has coordinated this community-wide event since 1983. It’s an all-volunteer, non-profit charitable organization with no paid positions and no government funding. Tax-deductible cash donations go a long way and are also accepted by mail at: South Lincoln Resources, PO Box 1638, Waldport, OR 97394.

The South Lincoln County Needy Children’s Christmas Program has gathered gifts for children of food basket applicants for almost 30 years. New clothing and non-electronic toys are matched to each child. These gifts are gathered all year. Every dollar of donated funds is used to purchase the gifts. For more information about the Children’s Christmas Gifts and how you can help, call Washington Federal at 541-563-3226. For more information about Operation Santa and Holiday Food Baskets, please call South Lincoln Resources at 541-563-2388.

Lincoln County’s various food pantries are getting the benefit of a lot of hard work by local organization from those who sing to those who save lives at sea.

The Coast Guard in Newport put on a scary Halloween Haunted House that collected 1,000 pounds of food and $200 in cash for Lincoln County Food Share. Food Share is the county-wide collection center that helps distribute food to food pantries from Lincoln City to Yachats. The Oregon Coast Aquarium, with their Creatures of the Night event, collected 2,335 pounds of food for food share. And the men’s a capella group “Coastal Aires” garnered 221 pounds of food during their two concerts in Newport and Lincoln City.

There have been other food drive events throughout the county that benefits individual food pantries serving their communities. ‘Tis the season.
