A young Yachats man, living on Coolidge Lane, was arrested Friday on charges of domestic violence. Deputies handcuffed Christian Batchelder, 20 and began marching him over to a sheriff’s patrol car but, they didn’t quite get him there. Deputies say he broke free and and took off running. He stopped short of a cliff that overlooked the ocean. As deputies approached him, Batchelder threatened to jump. For some 90 minutes deputies tried to convince him not to jump and to just come along quietly. He refused. Deputies called his family to come over and see what they could do.

Upon their arrival, Batchelder relented, walked away from the cliff and surrendered to deputies. He was later booked into the county jail on charges of Domestic Assault, Menacing, Resisting Arrest and Escape. Batchelder’s bail was was set at $60,000.

My Sisters’ Place Demonstration
Highways 101 and 20, Friday

Supporters of My Sisters’ Place, a refuge for those who have been abused, stood in the rain and fog at Highways 101 and 20 in Newport Friday afternoon, to keep their cause of preventing domestic violence, sexual assault and other abusive behaviors “top of mind” for motorists going by.

Supporters held small candle-like lights to symbolize the hope of October, officially Domestic Violence Awareness month, that more of our fellow citizens will take up the cause to battle not only domestic violence, but sexual assault and other assaultive behaviors aimed primarily at women, although a small minority of men suffer abuse as well. Statistics also show that date rape accounts for 70% of sexual assaults among college age women and adolescents. Young women between the ages of 14 and 17 suffer a rate of 33% for date rape.

Here in Oregon, the state department of health reports that nearly a third of all women between the ages of 20 and 55 will suffer threats of violence, actual physical and sexual abuse and stalking. In 2010, 35 Oregon women lost their lives to their abusers.

Among domestically violence households, 30% of the children witness physical assaults and 20% see sexual assaults. These children, say officials, later suffer physical, emotional and behavior problems. A recent survey of 17,000 Kaiser Permanente patients revealed that those who suffered in domestically violent homes were twice as likely to smoke, 10 times more likely to inject or otherwise use illegal drugs, 12 times more likely to attempt suicide, and much more likely to suffer depression disorders.

Those who have suffered domestic violence or sexual assault are encouraged to seek information or even refuge at My Sisters’ Place located in Newport. Their number is 541-574-9424.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies say they have arrested Richard Murry IV, 18 of Walport, on charges he assaulted his 16 year old live in girlfriend who is pregnant. Deputies Tuesday morning received a 9-1-1 call that Murry had punched the girl in the stomach at their residence on Read Drive south of Waldport and that he had left in a full sized pickup pulling a vehicle tow dolly. Sheriff’s units and Oregon State Police immediately began searching for Murry but later learned he had returned to the Read Drive address. Police quickly detained Murry and soon after arrested him on assault charges.

However, deputies say as they were getting more information on the incident, Murry’s sister Alyssa Murry, attempted to free her brother from the back of the Sheriff’s patrol car. Officers immediately stopped her and arrested her for attempting to interfere with police. She was also transported to the county jail where she was cited and then released due to jail overcrowding. Her brother Richard Murry was booked at the county jail for Assault, but was released after posting $15,000 bail.

Meanwhile, deputies say the parents of the girl transported her by private vehicle to PCH to have her evaluated.
