If you couldn’t get through from Newport to Corvallis today, here’s what was blocking the road; the underbelly of an empty logging truck that appeared to have been hit head-on my an oncoming SUV. The SUV driver, from Redmond, was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses said it was a horrific accident and which sent the logging truck driver to a Portland trauma center via a med-evac helicopter.
Troopers said those in both vehicles were wearing seat belts. Witnesses at the scene said there was very little left of the SUV. That the SUV driver, Duane Haugen, 57, of Redmond, never had a chance of surviving. Troopers say it appears that the SUV crossed over the center line on a fairly sharp curve and went straight into the logging truck, which was not carrying logs at the time. Driver of the truck, Michael Brown, 57, of Philomath, was helicoptered to a trauma center with serious injuries but none that were considered life threatening.
Highway 20 was completely shut down for several hours after the crash, was opened to one lane then late this afternoon the road was re-opened to normal traffic.
