Calling all Lincoln County Artists for “Chair-ity” Project
Provided by Children’s Advocacy Center

The first annual “Chair-ity” Project for the Children’s Advocacy has now begun. Be one of the first artists in Lincoln County to paint a chair, stool or other wooden furniture piece to benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center.

These one-of-a-kind pieces will be sold in local merchant shops across the county – Depoe Bay, Lincoln City, Newport, Toledo, Waldport and Yachats. Monies raised will support the direct services provided to abused children in Lincoln County. This project will run year round. Since it is our big tourist season, these pieces will sell quickly.

Artists will receive publicity and acknowledgement, as well as commission on their work. Photos of finished items will be placed on the Center’s website along with the artist’s bio and where it is located for sale. Tags on items will also showcase the artist. As items are finished, there will be more publicity about the “Chair-ity Project” including Portland media and in the valley.

The Center has a variety of chairs for artist’s use or artists may supply their own used chair or item. Items can be child-sized or adult. Illingsworth’s by the Sea has donated a cabinet with shelves for painting. Any style of art is welcome. Artists and merchants who display and sell items can receive a percentage of sales price. Remainder of selling price will go to the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Referrals to the Center have doubled during the first six months of 2012 compared to last year. More than ever, the children served by our private, non-profit agency are in need of your support. The Children’s Advocacy Center serves all Lincoln County’s children who are suspected to be sexually abused, physically abused, neglected, drug endangered and/or have been witness to violence. The Center provides assessment and evaluation services, child and family support, and counseling. All services are provided free of charge.

Please help us help the children by painting an item, buying a chair, or placing an item in your boutique/gallery/store. You can make a difference. This is truly the “art of caring.”

For more information contact the Center at 541-574-0841.

The League of Women Voters, like many other community minded organizations, have taken note of the economic stress that infects millions of American families. Lot jobs, lost homes, broken marriages, hunger, drug and alcohol addiction, depression and other mental health issues plague our families and especially our children.

But with the reduction in revenues coming into state coffers, there is precious little left to send to local communities to help families which are suffering in every county of the state. Children who are raised in such troubled families often fail to do well in school which means later on they fail to do well in life. And so the cycle repeats itself.

The League of Women Voters of Lincoln County have invited two local family advocates to give a clear picture on the status of Lincoln County families, including an assessment of what is happening to our community’s children. They are Barbara Dougherty of the Lincoln County Commission on Children and Families and Jane Lehrer of the Children’s Trust Fund. They will be guest speakers at the March 15th meeting of the League at the Newport Library, corner of Nye and West Olive. The program starts at 12noon.

Information wil cover recent forced reductions in state programs for children and how those changes have affected their ability to provide critical services to families in Lincoln County. They will also be talking about a proposal to ask Lincoln County voters to pick up some of the lost revenue that the state no longer has to give. That proposal is a small property tax override that would help stop the loss of these services and to provide a real safety net for our troubled families, made worse by the prolonged recession.

Everyone is invited to come and learn more about this important issue. Light refreshments will be served and guests are welcome to bring a sack lunch if they wish.

For more information, please call the League of Women Voters, 541-265-7532 or MDEmory@Peak.org.
