Every year about this time fire fighters from around the country raise empty fire boots in the air in a symbolic gesture to help those less fortunate. In the case of Newport firefighters the cause is the fight against Muscular Dystrophy, the pursuit of a cure made famous by comedian Jerry Lewis.

Newport firefighters, along with new Fire Chief Phil Paige, circulated among motorists stopped (or nearly stopped) for traffic at Coast Highway and Highway 20 to accept donations for “the cause.” Play the video to see how it went!

Food Pantry next to the First Presbyterian Church, Newport

Local businesses are stepping up to donate time, materials and labor to help create Newport’s first-ever charity food pantry, located at the First Presbyterian Church grounds on NE 12th in Newport. A new non-profit, Newport Food Pantry, acquired the portable building from the school district and will soon contain a fully stocked food pantry for those in need, whether long-term or temporary.

The Newport Food Pantry is expected to open within six weeks. The pantry is a food distribution partner with Food Share of Lincoln County which, up until now, has done all the Newport distributing itself. All other communities around Lincoln County already have their own pick-up locations.

The pantry building is getting a new roof courtesy of Keith Johnson Construction. Pro Build is graciously providing the roofing materials. The two companies are also providing the materials and labor for the building’s skirting.

However, more work needs to be done and the pantry is hoping other businesses in the community will come forward with donated labor and materials. The building needs a wheel chair access/pedestrian ramp that runs the length of the building (40′) with an above overhang so those standing in line aren’t rained on. They also need an electrical transformer and a junction box to install power to the building. They also need to get water and sewer connections tied in to the pantry. Add to that, food grade wire shelving, six at 48″ and six at 60″. If your business can help with these, please contact Newport Food Pantry’s Jim Gamb at 541-961-8366.

The Newport Food Pantry, although associated with the First Presbyterian Church, is its own stand-alone non-profit 501C-3. The pantry is a separate entity from the church.

Those icons of human kindness and energetic assistance, American Red Cross Volunteers, were up to their old time-tested good tricks Friday, helping tsunami affected people weather the storm in a warm, friendly and reassuring environment.

This merry band of Red Cross Volunteers were charged with helping to provide food and other important services to those who sought temporary shelter until the tsunami (in fact, tsunamis) had spent their geologic energy half-way around the world.

At Newport Intermediate Friday, these volunteers provided bedding, food, referrals as well as a good heart and friendly ear when the need arises.

Those who would like to experience Red Cross Volunteering, just call 541-265-7182 or stop by the American Red Cross Office at 308 SW Coast Highway.

The public is invited to attend the fourth annual “Heart for Horses” fundraiser benefit for the non-profit Bright Horizons Therapeutic Riding Center, from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 at Pacific Shores Motorcoach Resort, 6225 N. Coast Hwy. in Newport.

“This event makes it possible for Bright Horizons to keep helping people who need it,” Cline said. “The proceeds go directly to the care and feeding of our horses and to fund scholarships for riders in need.”

Bright Horizons serves a broad range of enthusiastic and hardworking riders, which seeks to improve the physical and emotional well-being of individuals and their families through therapeutic equestrian activities built on professionalism and trust with a focus on community education, communication and teamwork. Although the majority of the organization’s programs are designed for riders with special needs, the center also offer classes for able-bodied, independent and advanced riders. Staff and volunteers conduct a variety of educational and awareness programs that help support the center’s primary mission. These programs include field trips, equine-awareness opportunities for challenged youth, public speaking engagements, and other types of community-based events.

This year’s event will feature live music, a full dinner, and a silent auction featuring items ranging from equine-care products to weekend getaways and local services. All-inclusive tickets cost $50 per person, and are available at the Feed Corral, 634 N. Coast Hwy. in Newport, or by calling Bright Horizons Executive Director Amy Cline at 541-961-4156, or at the door on Feb. 12.

Originally based in Lincoln City, Oregon, Bright Horizons moved to its current location in 2007. Hosted by Walker Farms in Siletz, Bright Horizons is a member center of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).
For more information, please call Amy Cline at 541-961-4156, or email info@brighthorizonsriding.org.

Food Share Donated Jewelry

“Be Jeweled” Five Hour Jewelry Sale to Benefit Food Share, Jan. 29, 9am-2pm, Newport Recreation Center

“Be Jeweled” celebrates feeding the hungry by offering the public precious jewelry at great prices. Donations include 180 working watches, 55 vintage pins and a fabulous collection of clip or non-pierced earrings, many of which are vintage. With thousands of donated pieces, Be Jeweled offers hand-beaded and ethnic jewelry, opal and sapphire rings, pearl and gemstone necklaces, malachite, turquoise, lapis, and jade jewelry, lead crystal earrings, signed pendants and bracelets, 14 kt gold chains and sterling silver sets, to name just a few. A huge selection of craft jewelry and components will be available.

Nancy Smith, Food Share Director, believes that the charm of Be Jeweled lies in its uniqueness. “It’s a great way to help feed the hungry by donating jewelry you no longer wear and shopping for treasures new to you. This year, more than ever, Be Jeweled is an important fundraiser for Food Share. All proceeds will be used to help relieve the major problem of food insecurity in Lincoln County.”

Food Share’s Be Jeweled is modeled after a similar event on the East Coast. It’s a one-of-a-kind sale in Oregon.

“There are treasures here for everyone from casual costume to fine jewelry,” said local businesswoman Linda Neigebauer. “You can’t beat the prices. Many items are between $1 and $25.” Donations are still coming in!

This year Be Jeweled shoppers can browse both the Boutique and Bargain areas of the sale.

As an added bonus, all shoppers will receive Be Jeweled Coupon sheets (merchant coupon/discounts). Out-of-the-area and local patrons alike will have a chance to enjoy free or discounted items.

Doors will close at 11:15 and open again at Noon for a half-price sale.

For more information about Be Jeweled, call Nancy Smith at 541-265-8578 or visit www.FoodShareLincolnCounty.org. The Newport Recreation Center is located at 225 SE Avery in Newport, immediately behind Newport City Hall and the Senior Center.

It was raining Tuesday, a cold breeze was blowing and it was 39 degrees, but some good hearted Fred Meyer employee volunteers and their children were out at the Newport Recreation Center digging holes in planters and dropping in flower bulbs as part of a city beautification project. They came with boxes and boxes of bulbs of daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, crocus, irises and alliums. So come April or May, these planters around the recreation center should be exploding with bright summer colors.

Fred Meyer employees say it’s part of the company’s commitment to community service. Fred Meyer employees throughout their service area volunteer for various charitable or community events. The Newport Fred Meyer group routinely participates and raises money for Relay for Life for cancer research, as well as blood drives. Other stores pick their projects and carry them out throughout the year. All Fred Meyer employee activities like the one outside the recreation center Tuesday are conducted on employees’ own time. They are off the clock. But in this case Fred Meyer also donated the flower bulbs which filled the back of a large pickup. So when you drive by the recreation center this summer, you may have to wear sunglasses.

Newport Nazarene Church

Since Monday night’s overnight low will dip below freezing, the Newport Nazarene Church will once again re-open their warming shelter for the local homeless, both families and individuals. And with that reactivation the call has gone for volunteers; not only for food but for staffing as well. They need two volunteers per shift, and of course even more for breakdown from 6:30am – 8:30am Tuesday.

Anyone wishing to volunteer should contact Leah Moore with the Nazarene Church at 541-270-7876. And they hope you will ask your friends and associates if they would like to volunteer as well. The Nazarene Church is on NW 12th, just west of Highway 101.
