Witnesses say two young men were headed westbound on Highway 20 Sunday afternoon, when for some reason the driver lost control, their SUV going off the side of a very steep embankment, and rolled 40 feet down into the Yaquina River. The accident scene is just a couple hundred feet west of the easterly end of the Highway 20 construction zone.

The two men were able to crawl out of their upside-down-in-the-river vehicle and climb up the bank. Both were seen talking to law enforcement and Toledo Fire Rescue personnel. Both appeared uninjured but it was decided they should be taken by ambulance to PCH to be checked out.

A petroleum pollution sheen was seen emanating from the wreck. Toledo Fire-Rescue placed a containment boom around the wreck. Tow trucks were enroute
