Piece of Japanese Tsunami Dock
Enroute to International Terminal, Newport

The arrival of Newport’s piece of the Japanese Tsunami Dock took an early left hand turn coming down 101 this afternoon. The portion that Axis Cranes brought on the low boy was too big for what was envisioned for a Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami Memorial, planned for the front of the Hatfield Marine Sciences Center at South Beach.

So, crews temporarily dropped it off at the International Terminal just east of the Bayfront where it will be trimmed down to a more appropriate size. That process could take a few weeks according to HMSC officials.

  1. What is the old saying??

    Measure twice cut once???

I guess it is measure once, cut twice.

  2. Hmmm…so no one asked HMSC if they just wanted, for example, a 3′x3′ section (which would have cost about $75 to get here in a pickup) and just assumed they wanted a couple hundred thousand pounds of cement? How many thousands of dollars was that transportation cost? Who paid for this fiasco? Newport taxpayers?
