Finally, someone at Newport High School has discovered the secret of time travel! Binky Rudich, his friend Viv and his almost-human sheep, Bob, all tinker with a two-speed clock and pay dearly for their hyperactive curiosities. The trio find themselves in Crestview, Fourth planet in the Goolagong System, ruled by George Topax and protected by the Great Space Pandas.
“Time on Earth moves at the same speed all the time,” Binky says in the play. “But there is another speed, a slower speed, and if we could find it, everything would stand still on Earth and we would all spin off into the endless dark void of space.”
And they do.
But as earthlings and almost-human sheep are quick to learn, the two-speed time-slowing clock lands far from the ordinary. The adventurers meet a whimsical array of Crestviewians; an all knowing offstage voice, a birdlike newsperson, a washed out film actor, a fawning retainer, an enthusiastic jester, and an eager executioner! Buffy the Space Panda, reveals that their planet was named Crestview in hopes that “it might attract investors.” (Right. Got….it…sorta…)
This play may seem (only) fifty light years away from the usual Mamet adult fare, but, perhaps, not as far as you might think. So, ponder the question, “What if David Mamet wrote a comedy for kids?”
By recklessly posing such an existentially provacative question, we’re sure you will join us at the Robinson Theater on 4th Street for at least one of our performances. (Preferably more) The show runs May 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12 at 7PM.
