A log truck driver came upon this scene Friday afternoon on HIghway 22 north of Grand Ronde – a small car over the side of a 100 foot drop to a cold South Yamhill River below. Oregon State Police say the truck driver found Connie Weygandt still inside the vehicle. Police say he quickly attached a line to the rear of Weygandt’s small volkswagen and then called 9-1-1. Then he helped Weygandt to safety.

A short time later a tow truck was able to pull the car back up onto the pavement. Weygandt, from McMinnville, told officers she was concentrating more on the beautiful scenery than on her driving. She said the next thing she knew she was off the road and staring down a 100 foot plunge into the river. Fortunately, her front tires sank into the wet, soggy soil just enough to stop her.

Once restored to the pavement, Weygandt resumed her journey but, we assume, not before thanking the truck driver for his good samaritan assistance. The OSP said the truck driver’s name was not available.
