A doctor from suburban Seattle said he fell asleep cruising the Oregon Coast yesterday, and woke up this morning to his boat keeling over on a beach off NW 68th Street, just north of the Yaquina Lighthouse.
Oregon State Police and Newport Fire Department personnel found the 38 foot sailboat resting on its starboard side with a retired doctor inside. He told his rescuers he had been trapped inside the boat for several hours, but only moments before rescuers got there he managed to get to the outside. He was taken to PCH for treatment of hypothermia. The sailor, whose name was not immediately released, said he was retired and that he lived on his sailboat.
Oregon State Police and the City of Newport were discussing options on how to remove the boat.
