A novice surfer from Corbett was overcome by heavy surf off Oswald West State Park near Manzanita on Saturday. Oregon State Police say Duncan McCowen, 43, was surfing with others offshore at Short Sands Beach when they noticed his surfboard rolling and flipping in the waves. Troopers say when other surfers got to him he was unconscious. Once ashore they applied CPR until an ambulance arrived and its crew took over. McCowen was rushed to Tillamook County Hospital but attempts to revive him there failed as well. He was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Surf has been running very high and rough along the Oregon Coast, the same ocean conditions that overturned a crab boat near the mouth of the Yaquina River off Newport that threw three fishermen into the water. A Corvallis surfer paddled over and kept them afloat until a Coast Guard rescue crew arrived on scene, plucked them from the water and returned them to shore.
