As NewsLincolnCounty.com reported to you earlier today, work has begun on sports fields at Waldport, Toledo and Newport High Schools, all getting new artificial turf that should last for years and not require much maintenance. But another side-benefit is that Newport Prep School, immediately west of Newport High is getting it’s rear multi-sport playing field dramatically upgraded as well, with emphasis on the “up.” Dirt removed from Newport High is being taken to Newport Prep, just a block away and dumped there. All that dirt is being added to raise the level of the field to enlarge it’s playing room. For years, rhe field has had a nine foot slope at the west end which made for less than an even playing field for youth sports programs. The new dirt will raise the west end of the field by at least six feet, maybe slightly more, giving it a larger play area not only for Newport High football practice, but also baseball for young children, along with soccer.

It’s all being coordinated by the Newport Booster Club, a group of volunteers which supports youth sports for Newport schools. A booster parent told us that the new “Prep Field” could be leveled, graded and ready for play in a couple of months.
