We hear the sirens. We see the fire trucks roar by enroute to an emergency. We may pass by a horrible auto accident or a tragic house fire and see them hauling hose, ripping open a crashed car with Jaws of Life, saving people’s lives and their pets. They are our community’s firefighter rescue volunteers. But as we continually admire and praise them for their tireless service to our communities, there is another dimension to their service. Grief and sadness. For it is not only a small world, it is even a smaller community. The seldom told story of those who answer 9-1-1′s call is revealed in an article in the Statesman Journal.
