Friday afternoon Deputy Siscilee Gouge saw a white Ford Ranger illegally pass several vehicles southbound on Highway 101 near NW Lighthouse Drive in Newport. When Deputy Gouge attempted to stop the vehicle, it began to flee at a high rate of speed. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Newport Police Department units pursued the vehicle southbound. The vehicle got caught behind stopped traffic at Highway 101 and Highway 20.
Deputies and officers initiated a “high-risk” traffic stop and tried to take the driver into custody. The driver, 59 year-old Otis resident Mary Joanna Henderson, refused commands to get out of the vehicle. Deputies soon forced entry into the vehicle to remove her. Two deputies sustained minor injuries due to door glass being broken during a brief physical confrontation. Both deputies were later treated and released from the hospital.
Henderson was charged with trying to elude law enforcement – which is a Felony, along with Reckless Driving, and Resisting Arrest. Her bail was set at $80,000.
