First Presbyterian Church
227 NE 12th, Newport

The Newport Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Symphony will present two concerts for the Christmas season. The first, on December 16, will take place at the First Presbyterian Church, 227 NE 12th Street, beginning at 2 p.m. Co-directors of the orchestra, Kathy Follett and Barbara Wilcox, will preside. First on the program will be “Overture Strings,” two chamber ensembles of younger students of violin, viola, and cello directed by Wilcox performing a series of tunes including the famous Pachabel Canon. Follett, will then conduct the entire youth orchestra in “Pastorale” by Germane Tailleferre, “Nearer My God to Thee” (in what Follette calls a “rockin’ arrangement), and “Dance of the Blessed Spirits” by C.W. Gluck, featuring local flutist Jenni Remillard. The program will close with “Brook Green Suite” by Gustav Holst. The concert is free and open to the public, although donations to the Youth Symphony will be greatly appreciated, according to Follett. The day before, on December 15, the orchestra will be playing at the Oregon Coast Aquarium “Sea of Lights” event starting at 5 p.m.
