Lincoln City Councilors Monday night formally agreed to partner with Samaritan Health to build a much larger child day care center near the North Lincoln Hospital complex. The child center is currently housed at the Grange Hall, but with the growing need for child care for working parents, the old facility is not capable of meeting that challenge.
Samaritan officials say they will take the city’s $300,000 contribution along with other monies committed to the new $900,000 center and begin construction very soon. They say they would like to have it open by August of next year.
City Manager David Hawker reiterated what he’s said every time child care issue comes up, and that is “child care is every bit a part of Lincoln City’s economic development as adding new jobs.” He said an expanding child care center will certainly create jobs, but it will also allow parents to hold down full time jobs which contributes substantially to the local economy.
